Ibiti Project

Minas Gerais, Atlantic Forest

In the 1980’s, owner Renato Machado started buying up the land and old ranches neighboring Ibitipoca State Park, with the intention of protecting the area from development. Now, the inspiring Ibiti Project encompasses over 6,000 hectares, with 98% preserved or undergoing regeneration. Visitors would be key to the project’s success and survival, so Machado worked with designers to create unique lodgings that honor their beginnings.

At Ibiti, accommodations are more like experience styles. Engenho Lodge exudes the charm of a traditional Minas Gerais farmhouse, transformed hacienda-style with several rooms, an amazing kitchen and a spectacular dining room. There are also a handful of remote houses accessible by horseback, bicycle and 4×4, reserved for those seeking ultimate disconnection in the mountains. Mogol, a secluded hamlet where time seems to stand still, becomes a deconstructed hotel. Yucca vegetarian restaurant, the reception, and guest rooms are beautifully set in old homes, preserving the village’s identity. The project even restored the old church.

Ideal for: Getting off-grid, regenerative travel, mountaintop reflection

Coziness meets rustic refinement at Engenho Lodge. The crackle of an open fire, balconies adorned with flowers, and a grand piano in the living room add to the charm of the old farm atmosphere. Enjoy access to a sauna, jacuzzi, fitness room, and the Raízes Spa, which overlooks the lake and mountains. We adore Engenho’s kitchen, inspired by the owner’s love for the charming kitchen in the movie Ratatouille.

With just over twenty permanent residents, a stay in Mogol is a true rural experience, where dirt paths become hotel corridors. The luxury here is getting off grid with friends or family while still having your comforts. We love the freedom Mogol extends to families. Kids love it. It’s safe for them to run around and play or make friends with local children at the village’s experimental International School, which is essentially Mogol’s kids club.

While the young ones are entertained, we insist you meet Miguel, two-time world champion downhill mountain biker. As kind and humble as he is accomplished, Miguel is as dream guide for exploring trails on two wheels. And yes, there are electric bikes for a helpful little push.

Don’t miss a visit to Muriqui’s House, created by the Ibiti Project in collaboration with the Muriqui Institute of Biodiversity. This fully fenced four-hectare area of semi captivity allows visitors to observe the critically endangered muriqui monkey while helping to increase the population.
