Destinations to visit in Brazil
Get familiar with Brazil's six diverse biomes, so you'll know where to find Eden-like beaches, jaguars in the wild, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and cities buzzing with culture. Scroll to the bottom for a taste of Brazil's monthly climate and find the best time to visit Brazil.
Amazon
The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. To give you an idea, it spans nine countries and some 5,000,000 km2, with 60% in Brazil alone. This huge area hosts incredible biodiversity such as jaguars, primates, and colorful macaws.
In Manaus, uncover the capital city’s historic role in the Rubber Age, admire cultural gems like the Amazon Theatre, and witness the striking meeting of the Río Negro and Río Solimões, which form the Amazon River.
This region is a dream for adventure and nature immersion, with luxury river cruises and unique accommodations like Anavilhanas Lodge, perfect for wildlife encounters. In Pará, Alter do Chão offers a one-of-a-kind Amazon meets beach experience that families love.
Cerrado
The Cerrado biome, Brazil’s “wild savanna,” is a sprawling, biodiverse landscape the spans much of central Brazil. It’s a land of open plains, twisting rivers, and rocky outcrops, home to jaguars, giant anteaters, and vibrant birdlife.
In Goiás and Brasília, the Cerrado spreads across valleys and plateaus, seamlessly blending natural wonder with modern life. We love going hiking and wildlife spotting at Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and visits to the towering cliffs and verdant trails of Chapada dos Guimarães for dramatic views and waterfall swimming.
Head south to Bonito, where the Cerrado meets pristine rivers, limestone caves, and colorful fish. Snorkeling and diving in Bonito’s clear waters feel like stepping into a natural aquarium.
Caatinga
Resilient flora and striking landscapes stretch across the sunbaked northeastern Caatinga region, a unique semi-arid biome that’s only found in Brazil. Cacti, twisted trees, and seasonal blooms create a landscape that’s both stark and captivating, an unforgettable destination for those drawn to rugged beauty.
In Ceará and Alagoas, local communities with deep-rooted traditions make crafts that highlight the region’s resourcefulness. Adventurers will love exploring Chapada Diamantina, a national park famous for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and underground caves that feel like a hidden paradise.
The surreal white sand dunes and emerald-green lagoons Lençóis Maranhenses are a beautiful contrast to the Caatinga’s drylands. Meanwhile, the coastal town of Parnaíba offers access to a delta filled with winding river channels and wildlife, showcasing the varied natural wonders this region holds.
Pantanal
The Pantanal – think vast wetlands and jaguars! This huge ecosystem is supported by seasonal flooding that brings nutrients to the land, hosting an incredible biodiversity of plant and animal life. Declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage and Biosphere Reserve, the Pantanal stretches across several countries, but more than half lies within Brazil. This tropical wetland is a paradise for nature lovers, with its vast, vibrant biodiversity.
The dry season, from July to October, is the best time for wildlife observation as animals gather around lakes, marshes, and lagoons. In the wet season, between April and July, you’ll see the floodwaters receding, transforming the landscape into a lush haven and an optimal time for birders.
For the best jaguar sightings, we recommend the North Pantanal, particularly in the Porto Jofre region. South Pantanal is great for all-around wildlife experiences while staying at luxury accommodation – we love Caiman Lodge.
Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest is a lush, biodiverse haven stretching along Brazil’s eastern coast, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
From Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo, the forest covers rugged mountains and coastline, blending with the urban life of Brazil’s largest cities. Further south, Iguassu Falls stuns with thundering cascades of water framed by forest trails. The cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of seaside town, Paraty are backed by jungle-clad mountains, while nearby Fernando de Noronha provides an island escape where the forest meets crystal-clear waters, perfect for diving and marine life exploration.
Heading north, the Atlantic Forest embraces Bahia and the vibrant city of Salvador, where Afro-Brazilian culture and tropical greenery intertwine, offering a sensory journey of music, dance, and nature.
Pampas
The Pampas are southern Brazil’s stunning grasslands, with a unique landscape of rolling plains and rich biodiversity. The area offers vibrant wildlife, horseback riding through the open plains, and traditional estâncias (ranches), where gaucho culture comes alive. While the Pampas is a year-round destination, the warm summer months (December to February) bring a burst of wildflowers, painting the fields in hues of purple, yellow, and white.

In Salvador, mild temperatures and lower humidity provide comfortable conditions to wander its historic streets and taste Afro-Brazilian cuisine.
The dry season begins in the Pantanal, concentrating wildlife around shrinking water sources. This is prime time for spotting jaguars, capybaras, and vibrant birdlife in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. Along Ceará’s coastline, steady winds make beaches like Cumbuco and Jericoacoara a paradise for kitesurfers.
July continues the dry season in the Pantanal, with clear skies and optimal wildlife viewing conditions. In Lençóis Maranhenses, the lagoons formed by the rainy season reach their fullest, creating mesmerizing landscapes of turquoise waters set against sweeping white dunes.
